Scouting for Food - We will be meeting at the Scout Hut at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning (Feb. 13) for the bag delivery portion of our Scouting for Food Good Turn Project.

Parents and Leaders: We will need a few extra drivers for this project, especially those who can devote a few hours on both the delivery and pickup days (Feb. 13 and Feb. 20).

Mr. Brewer will have a sign-up sheet at Tuesday’s meeting for this project. Be sure to ask your parents if they can help out with the driving.

We will also meet at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20 to return to the houses to pick up the bags of food our neighbors will have left on their porches!

Thanks for Bill Brewer for coordinating this important project.

Scout Sunday – We will be celebrating Scout Sunday with our two Charter Organization Partners in February and will be attending church services as a Troop at Olivet Moravian and Brookstown Methodist Church.

Sunday, Feb. 14 – Olivet Moravian Church

Sunday, Feb. 21 – Brookstown Methodist Church.

Church service begins at 11:00 a.m. and we ask that our Scout families arrive by 10:45 a.m.

We will be asking Scouts to volunteer to participate in the Brookstown service at Tuesday’s Troop meeting. We will also be confirming with the Scouts who previously volunteered to participate in the Olivet service on Tuesday.

Scouts participating in the services should arrive at the church by 10:30 a.m., especially if you are ushering!

Eagle Scout Court of Honor – Hold the date: February 21. Austin H. is planning his Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Sunday afternoon, Feb. 21. We’ll be hearing more details from Austin soon.

Skating Merit Badge - Mr. Jacobius will be at Tuesday’s meeting to discuss rescheduling the Skating merit badge.

Scout Hut Quartermaster Day - The Troop Quartermaster and Patrol Quartermaster (along with some help from their patrols) plan to meet at the Scout Hut on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 21 for a quartermaster day. This will include taking an inventory of each patrol locker and getting our patrol gear ready for the upcoming camping season.

Re-Chartering - It's time to re-charter with the Boy Scouts. We are now accepting your annual Boy Scout re-chartering fee. This year’s fee is $15 for Scouts and Leaders. The final deadline for re-chartering is the Troop meeting on Tuesday, February 23.

For your convenience, the Troop will also accept your Wahissa Lodge (Order of the Arrow) dues and your summer camp deposit ($50) with your re-chartering payment.

OA Conclave – Attention OA members….there is a special incentive to sign up for this year’s OA Conclave at Camp Boddie. Wahissa Lodge is offering a special Conclave patch to those who pay their registration by March 1 and only those who register by that date will receive the patch. None will be sold! You can register and pay your registration fee at the Scout office on Silas Creek Parkway.

Court of Honor – Our next Court of Honor is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Brookstown Methodist Church.

In addition to honoring our Scouts for their progress at this Court of Honor, there will be a special presentation for the Old Hickory Council’s Family and Friends of Scouting program. The FOS program is our opportunity to support the hard work of the Old Hickory Council and the support the quality Scouting program we all enjoy locally.

Troop 919 Skating Merit Badge Postponed

The skating Merit Badge session planned for Saturday afternoon at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum Annex is being postponed. Mr. Jacobius will be the next Scout Troop meeting to reschedule the merit badge session.

There are no planned changes for Sunday's Winterplace ski trip at this time. Please watch your e-mail over the weekend for any announcements.

If you have submitted your liability release form you will have to turn it in on Sunday morning, including parent's signatures, before we depart.

Scouting For Food Bag Delivery Postponed

The Old Hickory Council has decided to postpone Saturday's Scouting for Food bag delivery because of the impending weather.

The Scouting for Food bag delivery will now be on Saturday, February 13 and the Scouting for Food bag pickup will be on Saturday, February 20.

Please note that the bags still have the original dates on them and the Council requests our help communicating the date that the food will be picked up.

Scouting For Food Bag Delivery – We will be meeting at the Scout Hut at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning (Feb. 6) for the bag delivery portion of our Scouting for Food Good Turn Project.

Scouting For Food Bag Pick-Up – The Scouting For Food bag pickup day will be Saturday, February 13. We will meet at the Scout Hut at 9:30 a.m. to return to the neighborhoods where we placed the Scouting for Food bags the prior week.

We will also need adult drivers (the same drivers from the week before, hopefully) to help our Scouts retrieve the community’s generosity.

WinterPlace Ski Trip – Plan to be at the Scout Hut at 5 a.m. on Sunday morning, Feb. 7 for the Winterplace Ski Trip.

All skiers must have completed the WinterPlace waiver form and had it signed by your parents before departing. There is a separate release form for skiing/snowboarding and snow tubing. Forms will be verified prior to the trip, so please bring the form Mr. Hough gave you at sign-up with you to Tuesday’s meeting.

The National BSA Council has amended the BSA Guide to Safe Scouting which now mandates that Scouts participating in Winter Sports MUST WEAR A HELMET.

The Winterplace packages include a helmet. If you are not planning to use the Winterplace rental equipment YOU MUST PROVIDE YOUR OWN SKI HELMET. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Skating Merit Badge - Mr. Jacobius is going to be the counselor for the skating merit badge for those Scouts who would like to participate. Most of the merit badge will be taught at the LJVM Coliseum Annex and will include two skating activities at the Coliseum Annex.

The coliseum activities will be held on:

Saturday, Feb.6th - 1:30pm- 4pm
Sunday, Feb. 14 - 1:30-4pm

The skating cost is $6 per person, plus an additional $3 if you need to rent equipment. You should arrive at the Coliseum Annex prepared to pay your fees directly to the coliseum. Sign-ups for the Merit Badge will be at Tuesday’s Troop meeting.

Olivet Moravian Scout Sunday – We will be participating in Scout Sunday at Olivet Moravian Church on Sunday, February 14.

Thanks to the Scouts who volunteered to participate in the Scout Sunday program. Please arrive at Olivet by 10:30 a.m., especially if you are an usher. Olivet will be reserving seating for our Troop, so please plan your arrival accordingly.

For your convenience, we will also accept your Wahissa Lodge (Order of the Arrow) dues and your summer camp deposit with your re-chartering payment.

Adult Leader Training - The Old Hickory Council will holds its University of Scouting adult leader training on Saturday, March 6 at Bethania Moravian Church. Information packets (including available sessions) and registration forms are available on the Old Hickory Council website. There will not be any “at the door” registration available for this event.

Old Hickory Council regularly conducts adult leader training, including This is Scouting, Boy Scout leader position specific and outdoor leader skills. The 2010 OHC training brochure is also available on the council website.

One of the goals of our Troop is to ensure that each adult leader with Scout conduct has completed his BSA training. If you are not sure where you stand on your training commitment, please check with Jim Pierson. Also, if you have completed a training class, please make sure we have it recorded in our TroopMaster database. Thanks for your attention to this important detail.

Summer Camp Deposit – Your $50 Camp Raven Knob Summer Camp deposit is due on March 1. Our summer camp dates this year are: July 18-24.

Paddling Training - There will be a "pre-Bear Island" paddling training activity in March. This activity is tentatively planned for March 13 or 14. We will have more info when the date, time and location is confirmed.

Huge Shout Out - A huge Shout Out to the Lasley and Gordon families!

When our Troop had transportation trouble en route to West Virginia, the Lasleys offered their Suburban and Mrs. Lasley drove it to Virginia to meet our stranded Troop. And Mrs. Gordon followed along to bring Roberta back home.

Thanks to both for stopping in your tracks to assist our stranded Troop!

Skating Merit Badge - Mr. Jacobius is going to facilitate the skating merit badge for those Scouts who would like to participate. A portion of the merit badge will be taught at an upcoming Troop meeting. The merit badge will also including two skating activities at the LJVM Colisuem Annex.

The coliseum activities will be held on:

Snow Camping – Our Troop’s annual West Virginia snow camping trip is this weekend. Plan to meet at the Scout Hut on Saturday morning at 7 a.m. and we should arrive home around 6 p.m. on Monday (Jan. 18).

Scouts should bring spending money (~$30) for fast food on the trip up and back and for the rental of cross-country skis or snow shoes.

Menu planning and duty roster assignments will be at Tuesday’s Troop meeting.

It’s been a plentiful snow year at Canaan Valley this year and it should be a great snow camping trip.

The following Scouts and Leaders are scheduled to go on this trip:

Scouts: Lyle G., Chris W., Paul L., Austin D., Thomas L., Devlin B., Logan E., Ben E., Will H and Avery C.

Leaders: Mac McCormick, Stan Gordon, Mike Warner, Tom Hardin, Mike Burke

If you are going on this trip, you must attend Tuesday night’s Troop meeting, dressed in the clothing you plan to wear on this trip. This is not a full shakedown, but we want to review your layering techniques, hats, gloves, rain gear, etc.

Refer to your Scout book for tips on winter camping gear. This is a drive up camping trip, so there will be plenty of room for an extra duffle bag warm/dry clothing. All Scouts MUST bring the following, at a minimum: 2 changes of socks per day, 1 extra pair of dry pants, long underwear tops and bottoms for each day, extra shirts, warm gloves/mittens (and a backup pair). Mittens will keep your hands warmer that gloves.

Plan to dress is loose layers and try to avoid wearing cotton…leave those jeans at home! Fleece, polyester acrylic or wool is best. Your boots must be waterproofed and good rain gear is a must.

Sleeping gear tips: Bring extra bedding in addition to your cold weather sleeping bag. You can put a fleece or wool blanket inside your sleeping bag. A good sleeping pad is a must for this trip.

Assume that everyone has enjoyed their holiday break and is ready to get back to Scouting. We return to our weekly Scout Troop meetings on Tuesday (Jan.5). See you there!

Snow Camping – We will once again be headed to the mountains of West Virginia for our annual Snow Camping trip over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend (Jan. 16-18). We depart early on Saturday morning and return late afternoon/early evening on Monday.

Final sign-ups for this trip will be at Tuesday’s meeting and menu planning will be on January 12. If you are going on this trip, you must attend the menu planning meeting.

Saturday, February 6 - We will be leaving food bags on household doors in the Pfafftown and Vienna communities

Saturday, February 13 – Return to the houses to pick up the filled bags!

Re-Chartering – Our Troop will be Re- Chartering with the Old Hickory Council in February. It will be our 55^th year!

The Re-Chartering fee this year is $15 and is due by the Troop meeting on Tuesday, February 23.

Christmas Package Delivery – Many thanks to all of the Troop 919 for your outstanding service in delivering the Christmas packages for the Forsyth County DSS Foster Family program. We delivers packages to 45 families!

When bad weather struck on the planned delivery, everyone happily adjusted their schedule to make sure we made these deliveries in a timely Christmas fashion. Great Job!

Many thanks to Stan Gordon and his crew for handling the logistics for this project and to the Vienna Fire Dept. for allowing us to use the training room as a staging area for the packages.

Scout Sunday – We will be attending Sunday worship services with our two Chartered Organization Partners in February. Please make plans to attend church with our Troop at Brookstown United Methodist and Olivet Moravian.

We are working with Olivet and Brookstown to determine the best dates for our visit. The dates will be announced as soon as they are confirmed.

Troop 919 will be meeting at the Vienna Fire Dept. at 2 p.m. this afternoon to deliver Christmas Packages to Forsyth County Foster Families.

The Vienna Fire Station is on Yadkinville Road near our Scout Hut and it's where Tim Lasley is the Fire Chief.

Families are invited and encouraged to help out with this holiday event. We have about 50 families to deliver packages to and will need lots of adult drivers!

CHRISTMAS PACKAGE DELIVERY UPDATE

DELIVERY POSTPONED TO SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT 2 P.M.

As a result of today’s winter weather, the Foster Families Christmas Package delivery has been postponed until Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

We will meet at the Vienna Fire Station at 2 p.m. on SUNDAY to receive the family assignments and their gifts and head out from there. The Vienna Fire Station is on Yadkinville Road near our Scout Hut and it's where Tim Lasley is the Fire Chief.

Hopefully, we will not have too many conflicts on Sunday afternoon and the weather will cooperate so our Troop can complete this good turn.

A few adult leaders are also need on Saturday afternoon to help unload the gifts from our Scout trailer and stage them for Sunday’s deliveries. Please contact Stan Gordon if you can help with task.

Troop Christmas Party – Don’t forget our annual Troop Christmas Party and Gift Exchange on Tuesday (Dec 15) at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown Methodist Church.

Scouts wishing to participate in the gift exchange must bring a wrapped Scouting or camping related gift. If you don’t bring a gift, you will not be participating in the gift exchange. The costs of the gifts should be kept to around $10.

Our Popcorn Awards will also be distributed at the party.

Adult leaders will also be participating in a gift exchange among the adults in the Troop.

And speaking of the party, please remember to bring plenty of snacks and drinks!

Christmas Family – We are still in need of gifts for the grandmother for the family our Troop is adopting for Christmas.

Please bring your gifts to Tuesday night’s meeting. If you can not make it on Tuesday, please bring your gifts with you on Saturday morning.

Christmas Package Delivery – The Christmas package delivery is this Saturday (Dec. 19). Please plan to meet at the Scout Hut at 9 a.m. to pick-up the gifts you will be delivering.

Families are invited to participate with Scouts in the Christmas package delivery on Saturday and WE WILL NEED DRIVERS! We usually have between 15-20 families to deliver packages to.

Enjoy Your Vacation – We will not have a Troop meeting on December 22 or 29. Enjoy your Holidays.

Troop PLC and Committee Meeting – The Troop Patrol Leaders Conference will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 17 at the Scout Hut.

This PLC is our annual planning meeting, so make sure your Patrol is well represented at this meeting.

The Troop Committee meeting follows at 7 p.m.

Brent Patterson Returns – Troop 919 EagleBrent Patterson will be returning to Winston-Salem from his tour of duty in Iraq on Tuesday evening. If you would like to meet Brent at the airport to welcome him home, contact Fred Patterson at the Scout Office (760-2900) for the details.

Cold Weather Camping Intro – Thanks to the hearty groups of Scouts and adults who attended this weekend’s Intro to Cold Weather Camping at Pilot Mountain. It was a great weekend and we’re now ready for Snow Camping.

Snow Camping Trip – Our annual Snow Camping trip will over the weekend of January 16-18, 2010 and sign-ups will begin at Tuesday’s night Troop meeting/Christmas Party. We depart on Saturday and return on Monday for this trip.

    My final project day will be this Saturday, December 12th, at St. John's Lutheran Church. It will begin at 3:30 and end somewhere around 5:30. We will be having ribs after the project is finished so stay around for awhile. If the weather is bad, the project will be canceled. Cold Weather Camping Trip – We will be meeting at the Scout hut at 9 a.m. for this weekend’s Cold Weather Camping Trip.

We will be camping at the Pilot Mountain group site. Remember your 10 essentials and plan to layer your clothing. Don’t forget your rain gear!

Our return time on Sunday: We should be back at the Scout hut by noon and will call with a more definite time when we are on the way.

December Intro to Cold Weather Camping Trip – This trip is our traditional “Intro to Cold Weather Camping” trip and if you think you might like to go snow camping in January, then this weekend’s trip is a requirement. Christmas Trees – The OA still has a nice selection of Christmas Trees available at their tree lot at the Scout Office.

Tree prices have been reduced: You may pick any tree on the lot for just $25!

The lot will be staffed this weekend on Saturday (9 a.m. – 7 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m. – 6 p.m.) or you may stop by during the week, select your tree and pay inside the Scout Office.

Troop Christmas Party – Our Troop Christmas Party and Gift Exchange will be Tuesday, December 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown Methodist Church.

Scouts wishing to participate in the gift exchange must bring a wrapped Scouting or camping related gift. If you don’t bring a gift, you will not be participating in the gift exchange. The costs of the gifts should be kept to around $10.

Our Popcorn Awards will also be distribiuted at the party.

And speaking of the party, please remember to bring plenty of snacks and drinks!

Troop PLC and Committee Meeting – The Troop Patrol Leaders Conference will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 17 at the Scout Hut.

The Troop Committee meeting follows at 7 p.m.

Enjoy Your Vacation – We will not have a Troop meeting on December 22 or 29. Enjoy your Holidays.

Troop 919 Christmas Family

Stan Gordon has volunteered to coordinate the Christmas gifts for our Troop’s Foster Family this year. Our contributions as part of the Relatives as Foster Parents program, which is managed through the Forsyth County Department of Social Services Department. This will be our Troop’s third year helping with the program.

Popcorn Money is Due! - ALL of your popcorn sales money is due at Tuesday night's Troop meeting. Mr. Gryder,Mrs. Neely and Mr. Wilhelmi will be there to accept the funds. If you need to request any special arrangements, contact Mr. Gryder.

Eagle Scout Reception - A reminder to a Eagle Scouts of the Eagle Reception on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at Bridger Field House (5:30 p.m.). There is no charge for Eagle Scouts to attend this event and it IS NOT A FUND RAISER! You will get a chance to see Alvin Townley, the author of two Eagle Scout books. If you can't make the event of Tuesday, a breakfast meeting is also scheduled for Wednesday morning (Dec. 2) in Mt. Airy. Call the Scout Office at 760-2900 for more detailss.

Please RSVP to the Scout Office if you are attending this event.

All Eagle Scouts attending the reception will receive a free gift.

Mr. Pierson is working hard to update everyone’s personal information (address, e-mail, phone numbers, etc.) in our TroopMaster computer system.

Christmas Trees - If your family usually purchases a live Christmas tree, please consider purchasing your tree from the Order of the Arrow.

The OA's tree lot is at the Scout Office on Silas Creek Parkway and is scheduled to be open the next two weekends or until the supply runs out. This year's trees are really nice, full Frasier Fur trees.

You can also stop by the Scout office during the day, pick out your tree and pay inside the office.

Congratulations to the Gryder family. Ben and his family were the first customers at this year's tree sale.

Proceeds from the sale of the trees will be headed towards Camp Raven Knob to help fund the construction of a much needed maintenance facility.

Court of Honor – A reminder that our November Court of Honor is this Tuesday (Nov. 24) at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown United Methodist Church.

Please remember to invite your families to help celebrate our successes!

Just as important as celebrating our successes is the fellowship and snack time following the Court of Honor. Please remember to bring plenty of snacks and drinks!

Popcorn $$$ - Our Popcorn Kernels will be at Tuesday’s Court of Honor and will be glad to accept your popcorn money.

If you haven’t completed your deliveries, please work to get this task accomplished over the Thanksgiving Holiday break. All popcorn money is due soon!

Updated Records – Mr. Pierson has been working hard to update everyone’s records in our TroopMaster computer system. He is planning to bring a printed copy of your personal information (address, e-mail, phone numbers, etc.) to Tuesday’s Court of Honor for you to review. Please make a point to update this important information and if you are not going to be at the Court of Honor, please get in touch with Mr. Pierson to complete this update.

Christmas Trees – The Order of the Arrow is selling fresh-cut North Carolina Frazier Fir Christmas Trees. The tree sales lot will be located behind at the Scout office and opens this Friday. The lot will be open on the weekends as follows:

Friday, Nov. 27            9 a.m – 7 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 28       9 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 29          1 p.m.- 6 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 5         9 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 6           1 p.m. – 6 p.m.

If your family purchases a fresh-cut Christmas Tree, please consider making your purchase to help Scouting. Tree prices start at $30 and proceeds will go towards helping to make improvements (Maintenance Facility) at Camp Raven Knob.

OA members (and others) are needed to volunteer at the tree lot. There is a job for everyone!

Christmas Project – Troop 919 is partnering with the Forsyth Dept. of Social Services again this year to deliver Christmas presents DSS receives for foster families. The package delivery will be on Saturday morning, December 19.

As a Troop, we would also like to adopt a family and are seeking a Scout and adult to coordinate this project. If you would like to help coordinate this project with the Troop, please volunteer at Tuesday night’s Court of Honor. Stan Gordon has offered to once again be our Troop’s liaison with the DSS.

Scouting’s National Hall of Leadership

Has Scouting made an impact on your life?

As part of the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, the BSA has created the "National Hall of Leadership". This recognition is designed to allow anyone to share stories about Scouts, Scout leaders, or other Scouting volunteers which demonstrate outstanding Scouting leadership through selfless and extraordinary acts of service.

Nominations for the Hall of Leadership can be made on-line at the BSA’s Hall of Leadership page. Each nomination should include a short story on how an individual has made or makes a significant difference in the lives of others by the extraordinary service they have given and the Scouting virtues they have modeled.

There is no age limit for the individuals who are nominated. Any individual who has been active in Scouting for at east one year is eligible to be nominated. Your story serves as a nomination for the Hall of Leadership Recognition and stories should be 450 words or less.

Up to 12 nominations from the Old Hickory Council will be considered for the National Hall of Leadership. Local judging will be conducted by a panel of community leaders representing a cross section of the council.

If you know someone who you believe has had an extraordinary impact on a Scout, a unit, a district, the council or their community be sure to take the time to nominate them for Scouting’s National Hall of Leadership. Nominations must be submitted by December 31, 2009.

Popcorn News – Many thanks to the Troop 919 for your timely pickup of your popcorn orders on Friday. Everyone picked up their popcorn ahead of schedule!

Now it’s time to deliver your orders and collect the money! Don’t delay….your customers are looking forward to receiving their delicious Trail’s End Popcorn!

December Camping Trip – We will begin our sign-up for our December camping trip at Tuesday’s meeting. The December is our traditional “Intro to Cold Weather Camping” trip and if you think you might like to go snow camping in January, then December’s trip is a requirement.

We will be camping on December 12-13.

This Weekend’s Backpkacing Trip – We enjoyed some amazing weather on this weekend’s backpacking trip to Doughton Park. The Philmont crew used the weekend as one of their shakedown hikes and met the Troop in the primitive camping area at Doughton Park.

Many thanks to our adult leaders on this trip, Mac McCormick, Tim Lasley, Mike Warner, David Jacobius, Mike Parrish, Brian Wham, Tom Hardin and Jay Wilhelmi.

PLC on Thursday – The Troop PLC will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday (11/19) to plan our Troop’s December activities. Please make sure your patrol is represented.

Board of Review – The Troop Committee will also be available on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. if you need a Board of Review for Rank Advancement.

Troop Committee Meeting – The Troop Committee will meet at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday (11/19) at the Scout hut following the Troop PLC and Board of Review meetings.

Court of Honor – Our November Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, November 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown United Methodist Church.

If you have merit badges remaining from summer camp, this is your last chance to complete the work to earn the merit badge.

And following the Court of Honor, we will have our traditional Troop fellowship, so be sure to bring some drinks and snacks!

Eagle Scout Projects – Andrew C. was able to complete his Eagle Scout project at Olivet Moravian Church on Sunday (our Chartered Organization Partner along with Brookstown Methodist). Many thanks to those who came out to help Andrew in this important step toward the Eagle Scout rank.

Backpackaing Trip - Our backpacking trip to Doughton park is this Saturday.

Menu planning for the trip is at Tuesday's meeting, so if you are on this trip, please attend Tuesday meeting.

If you would like to have some of our veteran backpackers check your gear (pack shakedown), bring your backpack to Tuesday's meeting and we'll be happy to give you some hints.

The Philmont crew is also using this trip as a one of their shakedowns and will be joining us on the trip. They'll be taking a different route and meeting us at the group site in Doughton Park.

We will meet at the Scout Hut at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning to depart for Doughton Park. The Philmont crew may be meeting at a different time, check with your crew advisers.

Eagle Project - If you are not going to be on this weekend's backpacking trip, Andrew C. is soliciting your help for his Eagle Scout project.

Andrew's project is the restoration of the playground at Olivet Moravian Church and will include some painting, sweeping, sawing (rebuilding benches), sanding, weeding, grass sowing, and sand spreading. Some of items you might want to bring to the project: yard rakes, phillips screwdrivers, shovels, safety glasses and gloves. Contact Andrew for more info on what tools may be needed.

The workdays are scheduled for November 14 and 21 and the hours are 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Andrew is remembering the 13th Scout Law that a Scout is Hungry, so he's promising lots of food and drink for those who can come out to help.

Popcorn Pickup - Our popcorn pickup is scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m. at Brookstown Methodist Church. If you can help with the popcorn pickup and sorting, pleasae contact our popcorn kernels Scott Gryder (Ben's dad) and Robin Neely (Andy's mom).

Everyone must pick up their popcorn on Friday because we can not leave popcorn at the church or at the Scout hut. If you are going to be out of town on Friday, please make arrangements with a friend to pick up and sign for your popcorn.

We have to schedule our popcorn pickup on Friday evening because we are leaving on the backpacking trip on Saturday morning!

Court of Honor - Our next Troop Court of Honor is Tuesday, November 24.

If you are finalizing a merit badge from summer camp or are working on a rank advancement, please plan accordingly. All summer camp merit badges must be completed by this Court of Honor.

The Troop Committee is scheduling a Board of Review meeting for Thursday, November 19 if you are planning on a rank advancement at this Court of Honor.

In Search of a few Good Scouts - Our Troop is looking for a few good Scouts...and maybe a few who have been in search of those elusive service hours.

There are two Veterans Day events this week that our Troop is supporting.

The Veterans Day parade in downtown Winston-Salem on Saturday - We have agreed to walk with our Cub Scout Pack in the veterans Day parade and are in search of a few Scouts to walk in the parade.

To be honest, I was a bit disappointed in the interest shown by the Scouts at last night's meeting for this effort and hope this e-mail will encourage you to reconsider your availability on Saturday morning.

We be lining up at Spring and Fourth Street at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and the parade rolls off at 10:00 a.m.

Many of us have family who has served or maybe are currently serving in our nation's military. Taking a few minutes to walk in a parde to salute them is one way we can honor their service to our country.

I look forward to seeing a good crowd on Saturday morning.

Flags at Brookstown - We are looking for a few Scouts to help place American Flags at Brookstown Methodist Church on Friday. If you can help with this project, be at Brookstown at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Portable Lights - Do you have a portable light set that you could loan the Old Hickory Council?

Our friend, Steve Daniel, the council popcorn man [among other things] and a former Troop 919 Scoutmaster, could use some assistance. He’s looking for some temporary lighting for the popcorn warehouse. Can you help? Do you have any ideas?

Here's a note from Steve:

TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT SCOUTERS:

IMPORTANT: Hey guys. Just a slight wrench in the works concerning the popcorn warehouse. Kind of the good news, bad news, scenario.

First the good news: We get to use the same large warehouse facility we used last year, and they've added two of the larger, working, docks and lifts!
Now the bad news: They're in the midst of refitting this warehouse with new lighting, and have removed all but a few lights! In other words, it's as dark as a cave in there. There are no other options that are big enough to work, and I just learned of this little glitch today.

Here's what we need to do: Luckily they still have outlets that work - I checked that - so we need to get the word out through whatever means we have available to Piedmont & Salem units that we need anyone with mobile lighting setups (lights on tripods or stands) to contact Steve Daniel, Adam Cook or Jean Dominique, so that we can arrange to borrow them for next Thursday through Saturday.

As long as we can get 12 or 15 sets of lights I think we'll be o.k.

Popcorn News - Tuesday’s Troop meeting is the LAST chance to turn in your popcorn order forms at a regular meeting.

If you would like more time to sell, Mr. Gryder will be at the Scout Hut Sunday November 1 between 2pm and 4pm to receive your order forms. All order forms must be turned in by Sunday afternoon!

Popcorn Pickup - Our Pocpcorn pickup will be on Friday evening, November 13.

A Friday evening pickup is necessary this year because the Troop will be leaving on a backpacking trip on Saturday morning . Please make a note of this on your family calendar.

Swine Flu - One of the Scouts from our Troop who attended this weekend's Piedomnt District SuvivorMan Camporee has tested positive for the Swine Flu.

Please be observant of any symptons and, of course, take the necessary precautions.

District Camporee – The following Scouts have signed up for the Piedmont District Camporee, which is this weekend of (Oct. 23-25).

Menu planning for this weekend's campout will be at Tuesday's meeting. If you are going on this campout, it's important for you to attend Tuesday's meeting.

We will be meeting at the Scout Hut on Friday (Oct. 23) at 5:30 p.m. to load gear and depart for this event and will be returning around lunch on Sunday. Scouts should eat dinner before arriving at the Scout Hut.

Popcorn News - Mr. Gryder and Mrs. Neely have the following news to share:

We have had an incredible start to the 2009 Popcorn fundraiser. Nine boys filled up 10 total forms during the Blitz week, and, the prizes are in! We will recognize these scouts and present the prizes at Tuesday's meeting.

Troop 919 also had a winner of the weekly council drawing. Chris W. will be getting an IPOD touch! Way to go!

If you have filled up an order form, be sure to bring it with you Tuesday and give it to Mr. Gryder or Mrs. Neely so you can be entered into the drawings for future weeks.

Eagle Scout Project - Tyler F. has scheduled an Eagle Scout Project workday for Saturday, Oct. 24 (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.) at Maple Springs United Methodist Church. As second workday is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31.

Scouts will be constructing a 2-rail split-rail fence around Maple Springs' community garden. The fence will help to keep deer and other animals from eating the garden's produce.

Maple Springs Methodist Church is located on Reynolda Road. Lunch will be provided.

Community Projects - Scouts from Troop 919 have been asked to help at Pack 918's Trunk or Treat on Monday, OCt. 26 and at Brookwstown Methodist on Friday, Oct. 30. Chris and Noah will have more info on these projects at Tuesday's meeting.

Adult Leader Training - Boy Scout Outdoor Leader Skills training will be offered at Camp Raven Knob on October 24-25. The training will take place at the Kyle Johnson shelter, which is near our summer campsite!

Outdoor Leader Skills is a must for all Boy Scout leaders to be considered fully trained. The training includes first aid, cooking, knots, plant/animal identification and more.

The cost of the course is $25 for those who register at the Scout office by October 20 and $35 for leaders registering after Oct. 20. For more info, e-mail kmkeene_2000@yahoo.com.
