Troop 919 Notes 9-27-09

REMINDER
Popcorn Kickoff Meeting is Tuesday

Don't forget our popcorn kickoff meeting is this Tuesday (Sept. 29) at 7:30 p.m. in the followship Hall at Brookstown Methodist Church.

The popcorn sale officially begins on October 1 and our popcorn kernerls are excited about sharing this year's program with the Troop! All Scouts are asked to make every effort to attend this meeting and are also asked to bring along at least one parent.

Our Troop depends heavily on the popcorn sale to fund our activities throughout the year and to keep our Scout Hut going. All Scouts are encouraged to get out and take popcorn orders on the first weekend of the sale!

Dixie Classic Fair - The adults from Troop 919 will once again be helping the Vienna Civic Club in their food concession at the Dixie Classic Fair. Our night to work this year is Wednesday, October 7.

We will be asking for volunteers at Tuesday's popcorn meeting. Tim Lasley is coordinating this activity.

Cub Scout Parent-Son Weekend - The first Cub Scout Parent-Son Camporee is this weekend at Raven Knob.

The Order of the Arrow staffs this event for the council and is urging OA members to volunteer to help with this event. See Kevin A. for more info.

Troop 919 Notes 9-20-09

Great Weekend at Brookstown – Our Troop had a great weekend at Brookstown Methodist Church as we began our celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America!

To celebrate the weekend, we camped at the church, completed several service projects, had a campfire program that included a flag retirement program and attended church as a group on Sunday morning.

Our service extended beyond Brookstown as we helped the Vienna Civic Club move some of their equipment to the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds.

Thanks to all who helped with the campout and service projects and to those who stopped by to say hello.

Popcorn Meeting – Our annual popcorn sale kickoff meeting is next week in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown Methodist Church at 7:30 p.m. Who knows, we may even have some tasty samples for your enjoyment!

All Scouts are asked to bring a parent along for the meeting.

The popcorn sale begins on October 1.

The Old Hickory Council is kicking off the year of celebration with its Year of Celebration - A Century of Making a Differencepatch Recognition Program for Scouts & Scouters.

The council is providing youth and adult Scouts with the chance to be a part of BSA’s biggest milestone yet—the 100th Anniversary Celebration and will be giving everyone an opportunity to make a difference … and earn recognition.

Through A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference, individuals can earn a 100th Anniversary patch by demonstrating dedication to five of Scouting’s core values—leadership, achievement, community service, character, and the outdoors.

Participants can earn patch segments in each category. The program will be both fun and engaging and, most important, will show America the impact that Scouting makes through its commitment to these values. A Year of Celebration began on  Sept. 1, 2009 and will continue through Dec. 31, 2010.

To earn the awards, Scouts must demonstrate personal growth and teamwork. Adults  and alumni must teach skills and become involved in Scouting activities. Specific requirements for each patch segment can be downloaded by clicking on this Year of Celebration Requirements link .

Locally individuals can also earn the right to purchase a specially designed 100th Anniversary belt buckle when they've earned all the patch segments and participated in some of the events our council will be having.

A local Achievement Record Card will be provided to all Scouters and Scouts to track completed local events.100th Anniversary Belt Buckle requirements can be downloaded by clicking this link. Once a card is successfully completed it will need to be turned in to the Scout Center where the belt buckles will be available.

Through this celebration element, local Scouts will impact their communities and raise awareness of the values we teach as we celebrate a century of living by the Scout Law. Be sure to download the patch & buckle requirements and record card and get started on the requirements soon!
