POPCORN NEWS - Blitz Weekend Extended Through October 5!

Popcorn Blitz Weekend Extended!

The Old Hickory Council popcorn sale Blitz Weekend has been extended through Sunday, October 5th.

As a result of the localized temporary gasoline supply shortage, the Old Hickory Council wanted to make sure that every Scout in the area had an opportunity to earn the Blitz Weekend prize.

This means that every Scout who fills up a complete take-order form during the nine-day period of Saturday, September 27th through Sunday, October 5th will qualify to receive the Princeton Tec headlamp Blitz Weekend prize.  You will also be qualified for the Wake Forest Sports Spectacular!

In order to qualify, you must bring your order forms to our Troop meeting on Tuesday, October 7.

An extra copy of the take-order form can be downloaded from the Old Hickory Council popcorn page.

T-919 Notes 9-29-08

Backpacking Trip - Congratulations to the Troop 919 backpacking team for "being prepared" for a great hike to the backwoods at Camp Raven Knob in the rain on Saturday.

A special thanks to Jay Harmel, Mike Warner, Bill Brewer, David Jacobius, Michael Hough and Jimmy Holder for your leadership and transportation services on the trip.

If you were on this weekend's backpacking trip, please remember to arrive at Scouts early on Tuesday to put away your tarps and tents. Let's hope they are dry!

NYLT - Congratulations to Tripp H., Danner W., and Jeffrey S. for your successful completion of the "Top Gun" New Youth Leader's Training program. We eagerly await all of the great stuff you will be bringing back to our Troop!

Popcorn - Don't forget to bring your completed popcorn sales sheet to Tuesday's meeting to qualify for the Princeton headlamp from the popcorn blitz weekend.

...and keep selling popcorn! Our Troop really depends on your great success!

Council Camporee - Our next Troop camping trip will be the Council Camporee at the North Wilkesboro airport, October 24-26. We will be meeting at the Scout Hut on Friday (Oct. 24) at 5 p.m. for this trip.

If you are planning to take the Aviation Merit Badge at the camporee and want to fly, remember that Tuesday's meeting is the final deadline to submit the Young Eagles application. You can not fly without completing this application and space is very limited. You also have to sign up for the merit badge in advance.

Parent-Son Camporee - The Cub Scout Parent-SOn Camporee for Piedmont and Salem districts is at Camp Raven Knob this weekend.

The Order of the Arrow serves as staff for the camporee and Wahissa Lodge would appreciate any OA members who can make it up to camp on Saturday, arriving early on Saturday to help with the camporee activities. If you want to camp, you may arrive on Friday evening.

If you are an OA member and can help this weekend, please let our Troop OA rep [Andrew T.] know at Tuesday's meeting.

T-919 Notes 9-14-08

Backpacking Trip - The program for this week's Troop meeting is backpacking cooking and menu planning. You will need to complete your menu planning this week because we will not be meeting at the Scout Hut for a regular Troop meeting next week. The Aviators are responsible for the program this week.

Scouts who have signed up for the backpacking trip include:

Ravens - Evan L.
Alpacas - Ben G., Josh J., Lyle G., Andrew S., Paul L., Avery C.
Aviators - Devlin B.
Zombie Cows - Alexander Z., Andy N (?), Bryce W., Jeffrey Z., Austin DeH.

Hopefully, additional Scouts will sign up on Tuesday, especially Raven Scouts and Aviators.

The backpacking trip is a one nighter. We will be departing the Scout Hut on Saturday, Sept. 27 and returning mid-day Sunday. This will give you plenty of time on the first weekend of popcorn sales to complete that first order sheet and win one of the Princeton headlamps as well as qualify for the Wake Forest Sports Spectacular in the spring.

If this is your first backpacking trip with our Troop and you don't have a backpack or other gear needed for the trip, you don't need to rush out and make a quick purchase. We have lots of resources in our troop and there is equipment you may borrow for this trip. Please let a leader know that you would like to borrow a backpack and you'll be fixed up. Don't let the lack of equipment keep you from going on this trip!

Prior to this trip, there will be a backpack shakedown at 6:30 p.m. at the Scout Hut on Tuesday, Sept. 23 prior to the popcorn meeting. If this is your first backpacking trip with the Troop, please arrive at the Scout Hut with your backpack completely packed as if you are heading out on the trip to have it checked over. This will give you the opportunity to remove any unnecessary gear or to add the item you may have forgotten. You should plan to leave your backpack at the Scout Hut.

After the backpack shakedown, we'll head down to Brookstown for our popcorn meeting.

PLC Meeting - Tripp H. will hold his fist Patrol Leaders Council meeting as our new Senior Patrol Leader on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Scout Hut. All Patrol Leaders and Scouts with Troop leadership positions should plan to be present at this meeting as a show of support for Tripp and Danner as our new leaders.

Troop Committee - The Troop Committee will meet at the Scout Hut at 7 p.m. at the Scout Hut following the PLC meeting.

Board of Review - The Troop Committee will also be available on Thursday at 6 p.m. to conduct a Board of Review for any Scout who is eligible for rank advancement. Remember to schedule your Scoutmaster Conference prior to your Board of Review.

OA Fall Fellowship - If you a member of the Order of the Arrow, don't forget Wahissa Lodge's Fall Fellowship is this weekend at Camp Raven Knob. Activities kick off on Friday evening and conclude on Sunday morning. The cost for the event is $15.

This is one event that OA members look forward to every year becuase it's all fun...which means you will not be asked to preform cheerful service!

Our Troop is a member of the Elauwit Chapter and the chapter's theme for Fall Fellowship this year is Vikings. So grab your best Viking "stuff" and head up to camp to help your chapter to retain the Lodge's Spirit Award. You can easily make a shield or sword out of cardboard to get things started.

The weekend also includes the lodge elections, chapter elections, quest events in the afternoon and the famous Lodge carnival in the evening.

Elauwit Chapter will also have its new T-Shirts ($10), patches ($5) and pins ($3) available in the trading post.

Salesmanship Merit Badge - Mr. Gryder will be continuing the Salesmanship Merit Badge on Tuesday. Scouts participating in these sessions should be at the Scout Hut at 7 p.m.

Popcorn Meeting - A reminder that we will be holding our popcorn kickoff meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Brookstown United Methodist Church. All Scouts are urged to attend this meeting to learn about this year's popcorn sale. We would also like at least one parent from each Scout family to attend this important meeting.

All Scouts who fill one order form on the opening Blitz weekend will win a Princeton Tec headlamp and all Scouts who fill at least one order form during the course of the sale will be invited to the Wake Forest Sports Spectacular in March.

Marshall Foster, Troop 919's very own popcorn kernel, always has an exciting popcorn sale for our Troop...and yes, you can win prizes. We'll be hearing more about this year's popcorn sale from Marshall Foster at the meeting on Sept. 23.

As a reminder, the annual Boy Scout popcorn sale is our Troop's only fundraiser and the money our Troop generates from your popcorn sales enables our Troop to fund our outdoor camping program, pay for our equipment and to pay for the upkeep on our Scout Hut.
