T-919 Notes 1-26-08 (Monday, January 28, 2008)

Winter/Cold Weather/Snow Camping Trip - Congratulations to the adventurous hardy soles who took part in last weekend's Snow Camping trip to Canaan Valley, WV. We had a great trip, learned how to survive the cold and some even got in some cross-country skiing.

We got all we wished for on this trip. There was about a foot of snow on the ground when we arrived and snow flurries continued through the afternoon. We experienced our high temperature for the weekend when we arrived late Saturday afternoon with air temperature breaking the mercury at about 20 degrees. The temp quickly headed South from that point and the winds began to pick up. On Sunday, the high reached a balmy five degrees and the winds kicking in from the Northwest, so it felt like it was about 15 degrees below zero. Yes, that Fahrenheit! It was still below zero when we left on Monday morning.

A special thanks to the adult leadership on this trip: Mac McCormcik, Richard DeHeck, Jimmy Holder, Mike Warner and Jay Harmel.

February is going to be a very busy month for our Troop. Our activities will include:

Scouting For Food - We will be spending the next two Saturday mornings serving our community in this Scouting Good Turn Project.

Saturday, February 2 - We will meet at the Scout Hut at 9 a.m. to canvass some Pfafftown and Vienna neighborhoods and place the Scouting for Food bags on resident's doors.

Saturday, February 9 - We will meet at the Scout Hut at 10 a.m. to return to the neighborhoods where we left Scouting for Food bags the week before to pick up the bags of food the residents have left.

We will need lots of Scouts on both Saturdays for this project and we also need adults to drive groups of Scouts on both Saturdays. It would be great if most of the adults who drive on the first Saturday can return on the pick up day. That will help to ensure that we make sure to return to all of the neighborhoods we visited the week before.

Thanks to David Jacobius for coordinating this important project.

Scout Hut Workday - A couple times each year we need to take a break and perform a little housekeeping around the Scout Hut. Our next Scout Hut workday will be on Saturday, Feb. 2. Please consider planning to stay at the Scout Hut for the workday after you have completed your Scouting for Food bag delivery.

Scout Sunday - Our Troop will be celebrating Scout Sunday with both of our Chartered Organization Partners in February.

On Sunday, February 3 we will be attending worship service as a Troop at Brookstown United Methodist Church and on Sunday, February 17, we will be attending worship service at Olivet Moravian Church.

Our annual visit to our Charter Organization Partner's services, gives our Troop an opportunity to say Thank You to our sponsors and to demonstrate that the promise of Scouting is flourishing in our community.

Please make your plans to attend church service with your Troop on these two Sundays.

Troop Ski Trip - The annual Scouts, Family and Friends ski trip to WinterPlace in West Virginia is Sunday, February 10.

Sign-Up for this trip will be at the next two Tuesday Scout meetings and your fees must be paid when you sign up.

The cost for this trip is $44 and includes your lift ticket, ski equipment (skis only), lunch and a ski lesson. There are options for snowboarding and tubing.

We need an adult volunteer to help coordinate this trip, which includes helping Mr. Hough with the sign-up and collecting the money, having Scouts and parents/guardians complete the liability release forms, arranging transportation and turning in all of the paperwork to the Scout Office by the deadline (we want to make sure we get the good rate).

Troop Re-Chartering - We have been working on the task of re-chartering our Troop with the Old Hickory Council and are fast approaching the final deadline. If you have not paid your registration fees ($22 for Scouts who subscribe to Boys Life, $10 for Scouts who do not subscribe to Boys Life and $10 for adults), please bring your fees to Tuesday's meeting or make arrangements with someone to bring them for you.

March Camping Trip Date Change - The date of our Wilderness Survival camping trip has changed to the weekend of March 7-9. The camping trip will be in the backwoods at Camp Raven Knob and teams of Scouts will be given the opportunity to build their own survival shelter.

Wilderness Survival Merit Badge - We will working on the Wilderness Survival at our weekly Troop meetings in February.

Summer Camp - It's not too early to be thinking about Summer Camp. We will be camping at Camp Raven Knob the week of July 13 and will begin our Troop sign-up in February. Summer camp deposit is $50 and the total fee is $195, plus any activity fees. Most Scouts in our Troop will have a portion of their Summer Camp paid for from the proceeds of our popcorn sale. Way to go guys!

OA Election Team - Our Troop has promised Elauwit Chapter - Order of the Arrow - that we will provide one election team for this spring's Troop OA Elections. An election team is comprised of three youth and one adult OA member(s) [someone has to drive!].

If you can help with this important project, please let Paul L. know at an upcoming Troop meeting.

Our Troop's election team will be responsible for conducting OA elections at several nearby Troops.

Troop 919 OA Elections - Our Troop's OA elections are scheduled for Tuesday, March 4.

Order of the Arrow Conclave - The OA Southern Region, Section 7B Conclave is scheduled for the weekend of April 18-20, 2008 at Camp Bowers near Lumberton.

Our OA Chapter is trying to take a large contingent to this year's conclave to help Wahissa Lodge retain the spirit award that we won at last year’s Conclave.

If you haven’t been to a conclave, ask some of your fellow Troop 919 Scouts who have attended one and they can tell you how much fun we have at Conclave. There is NO work and it’s a lot of fun. Even more fun than Fall Fellowship!

You should have received a flyer on this event from the Lodge.

Let’s plan to take a large contingent of Troop 919 Order of the Arrow members to Conclave in 2008.
