Note to Troop 919 from Piedmont District Chairman (Monday, December 24, 2007)

Fred Patterson, chairman of the Piedmont District, asked that his note to Troop 919 regarding our community service project on Saturday be distributed to the Troop.

To the Scouts, Leaders and Parents of Troop 919:

What  an awesome display of Scouting spirit! Kudos to Scouts , Leaders and parents!

As Chairman of Piedmont District of the Old Hickory Council, I congratulate each of you.

You may never know about the lives you have impacted because of your sacrifice and kindness.  You have demonstrated to those you served and to the whole community that there is more to Scouting than camping and hiking...be proud of what you have done and let it sink in.

As we prepare for Christmas day, blessings to each Scout and his family and our leaders!

Fred Patterson
Piedmont District Chairman

Christmas Package Delivery Project

The response received from Troop 919 and our friends at Troop 918 on Saturday for the Christmas package delivery project was amazing! Saturday was an awesome real life example of Scout Spirit and living the Scout Law in real life.

Our Troop’s overwhelming response to Saturday’s opportunity to “do a good turn” only comes as a surprise to those who do not know Troop 919 and its Scouts and Scout families.

There must have been about 75 people at our Scout Hut on Saturday. Thanks to all of the Scouts and families who participated in Saturday’s Good Turn…thanks to Troop 919 Scouts for so readily agreeing to take on this community service project…thanks to Mr. Gordon for coordinating with the Department of Social Services…thanks to Mr. Swart for taking the Scout trailer to pickup the packages…thanks to the all of the drivers (there were about 25 of you) and thanks to Mr. Smith and his friends at Sherwood BBQ for the coffee, juice and tasty biscuits.

Some Scouts were talking on Saturday about how much they look forward to next year’s opportunity and how they will encourage our Troop to adopt a family (or maybe even families) as well.

Mr. Gordon reports that he has spoken with our contact at the Forsyth County Department of Social Services and the families we may have thought were not included in the list on Saturday have been taken care of and will enjoying Christmas.

In another testament to the Troop 919 families, when it appeared there may not be some gifts for families on the list, our Troop families wanted to dig cash out of their pockets and head out shopping to make sure all families on the list would be enjoying Christmas.

Our Troop is the best!

Merry Christmas to all…..

T-919 Notes 12-17-07 (Monday, December 17, 2007)

Intro to Cold Weather Camping Trip – Our Intro to Cold Weather Camping trip to Stone Mountain was this past weekend. The temperature warmed up on Saturday night and the heavy rains did not turn into snow or ice!

All Scouts and adults on this trip had a great time and we even got to see the new Stone Mountain trail that’s under construction (can you say switchback?).

A huge thank you to the adult leaders and drivers on this trip, including Michael Hough, Tim Lasley, Jay Harmel, Matt Zimmerman, Mike Burke, Scott Washburn and Richard DeHeck.

Christmas Party – Don’t forget our Troop Christmas Party and Scout gift exchange is Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown United Methodist Church.

Scouts who plan to participate in the gift exchange must bring a wrapped gift (Scouting or camping related) in the cost range of $10. Scouts who do not bring a gift will not be able to participate in the gift exchange.

Scouts and families are also asked to bring some snacks and drinks for the evening’s festivities.

And if you have not been to a Scout meeting in a while, this would be a great meeting to attend. Bring a gift, bring some goodies and enjoy the Scout Spirit of the evening.

Popcorn Awards – Troop 919’s Popcorn Kernel Mashall Foster will be distributing the Troop’s popcorn awards at the Christmas Party on Tuesday.

Be sure to attend Tuesday’s meeting to receive your popcorn sales awards.

A Scout is Helpful
– Our Troop will be busy this weekend delivering Christmas packages to needy families in Forsyth County and we need Scouts and adults (drivers) to participate. The gifts have been arranged by the Forsyth County Department of Social Services and our Troop will be providing the delivery.

We will be delivering gift to about 36 different families throughout Forsyth County on Saturday morning (12/22); we will be meeting at the Scout Hut at 10 a.m. We will also have a sign-up sheet at Tuesday’s Christmas Party and encourage all Troop 919 Scouts to participate in this good turn activity. Community service hours will be awarded for your participation in this very worth project.

Mr. Gordon is making the arrangements with the Department of Social Services. He and Mr. Swart are going to take our Scout trailer to pickup the gifts on Friday. If you think you can help with the pickup and sorting, be sure to make the offer to Mr. Gordon and Swart at Tuesday’s meeting.

We are going to need a lot of help with this project. Please invite your family and friends to come along on Saturday to lend a helping hand.

Be sure to wear your Class A uniform!

T-919 Notes Message (Saturday, December 8, 2007)

December Camping Trip - If you think you might be joining the Troop on the December camping trip to Stone Mountain (December 15-16), it's importatant that you attend the next two weekly Troop Meetings.

At these meetings the program patrol will be spending time reviewing and teaching Cold Weather Camping techniques, including sleeping, cooking and clothing for cold weather.

If we are lucky enough to find snow in January, attendance at a Cold Weather camping trip (like our December Intro) will be requirement.

We will be signing up for the December trip at Tuesday's Troop meeting and menu planning for this trip will be on Dec. 11. You must attend the menu planning meeting if you plan to go on the camping trip.

December PLC - The Troop has decided to keep its December PLC meeting on Thursday, December 20. This is the last day of School before the Christmas break.

The December Patrol Leaders Conference is an especially important meeting. It's the meeting where the PLC plans our trips for 2008. By the way, all PLC meetings are important!

At last week's meeting you offered some suggestions for trips you would like to take in 2008. We will continue that brainstorming at Tuesday's meeting.  If there is an activity you would especially like to see the Troop add to its calendar in 2008, be sure to tell your Patrol Leader and then make sure he is planning to attend to the December PLC to voice your desires.  If he is not going to make it to the PLC, maybe you should offer to represent your patrol in his place.

Troop Holiday Party - Don't forget our Troop Christmas Party on Decemnber 18.  If you want to participate in the gift exchange, you must bring a Scout or camping related gift (around $10). Scouts are also asked to bring some snacks and drinks for the Christmas party.

We will be meeting in the fellowship hall at Brookstown United Methodist Church.

Popcorn Awards - Marshall Foster will be distributing the Troop Popcorn Awards at the Christmas Party.
