ORDEAL IS ON!

The Order of the Arrow Ordeal Weekend will go on this weekend as planned. There was concern over the potential impact of Hurricane Hanna but forecasts have the storm on a more easterly track. More information can be found at http://www.wahissa.org/ - click on Ordeal II. (an extract follows)

After studying the weather reports, the Lodge Key Three have concluded that Hurricane Hanna will not affect the Ordeal. Therefore, we will still be having the Second Ordeal this weekend. Please note that although winds should not be a problem, we will most likely have rain Friday to Saturday morning. An extra change a clothes is reccomended for all participants, and all clothing and other items that you do not wish to get wet should be sealed in Zip-lock baggies or similar products. We thank you for your patience as we work to ensure the safety of all participants. If you have any questions, please call Paul Isaacson, Lodge Chief, at 1-336-785-5432.

Dates: September 5-7

Registration is from 6:30 to 7:10 pm at Camp Raven Knob's Dining Hall. Please note that this is a change. Our apologies for any inconvenience.
On Sunday morning we ask all parents to pick up their scouts at the Dining Hall at 11:00 am.

Cost for candidates = $30.00. There will be a Lodge Trading Post, so please bring extra money.
Cost for members = $15.00 or free with the Pipe Pass.

District Note: Nominations / Round Tables

TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT SCOUTERS:

We are in the process of receiving nominations for members at large for Piedmont District.

A member a large is a voting member of the district committee. They are also individuals who can be called upon to serve on one of the various subcommittees of district operations.

These subcommittees include; the Program Committee (plan and take part in camporees, pinewood derbies, day camps and other events through the district), Finance Committee (coordinates the popcorn sale and FOS campaign), the Membership Committee (coordinates the Cub Scout Fall Recruitment through our schools, and other membership related events during the year). The Training Committee helps to train our adult volunteers in New Leaders Essentials and Leader Specific Training. Another important group of volunteers includes our Commissioner staff. Our commissioners are friends to our packs, troops, crews and ships. They offer support and guidance and keep units apprised of things going on at the district and council levels.

If you know of someone who has the skills to serve in one of these areas, please let us know. Please e-mail nominations to Nick Jamison at ahwandaj@aol.com.

This is open to ALL registered adult leaders and there are special sessions for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture Scouts. Attending Round Tables is a key aspect of becoming a better informed leader. Better Informed and Better Trained Leaders historically produce a Better Program for the Scouts.

2008 BIG SWEEP WATERWAY CLEANUP

The annual Big Sweep waterway cleanup, coordinated locally by Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful, will be held Saturday, October 4 from 9AM to 12:30PM.
Last year nearly 4,000 volunteers, including many Scout groups, removed nearly 35,000 lbs. of trash and debris from rivers, creeks, ponds and lakes in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. This is an excellent opportunity for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts to get some service hours, cleanup the environment, and have some fun!

All supplies will be provided as well as breakfast and lunch!

Many cleanup locations have already been established and you can pick one of those, or you can establish your own location. To volunteer please call George M. Stilphen or Kittie Mattox at Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful at 727-8013 or e-mail georges@cityofws.org.
(George is also Scoutmaster of Troop 719 in Lewisville).

I am creating a list of favorite camping spots from the units in Piedmont District. This information will be compiled and presented at the September 11th District Roundtable. I may ask some of the contributors to give a brief talk about why they chose their favorite site. A DVD will be distributed with all of the camping information at the meeting (This will be a great resource in planning your unit’s outings). Do you have any scouts who may be looking for an Eagle Scout project…or a troop looking for a very worthy day project?

I’ve just become aware of Twisted Whisker Farm Sanctuary (Pinnacle) which is a sanctuary for abandoned pets with special needs/health issues. The owner has recently relocated her home and all her animals to a new location and is in desperate need of assistance in preparing the sanctuary for the winter. I’m enclosing additional information below. Please feel free to call Kris (the owner) directly @ (336) 756-2833 or myself (336) 972-0321. Kris is a teacher at Mineral Springs Elementary, so is not generally available during the weekdays. Pls. leave a message if you get her voicemail.

See pictures from Twisted Whisker Farm Sanctuary below. Twisted Whisker offers a forever home for abandoned pets with bowel disease, diabetes, blind, FIV and FeL positive, animals with special needs and deformities as well as the aged, and is located in Surry County, NC - near Pilot Mountain.

Kris Rieck formed her North Carolina sanctuary, a lifelong dream, before Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. Formerly a resident of Virginia and retired from the military, Kris purchased property in a remote area with beautiful rolling hills near Pilot Mountain, NC. Kris' lifelong dream does not exactly fit the norm... she built a sanctuary for special needs animals, i.e. the unadoptables. She employs local resident animal lovers to help her with the daily chores. Life did seem wonderful.

Kris, director of Twisted Whisker Sanctuary (TWS), also works as an elementary school teacher and uses her income to sustain the sanctuary. Hurricane Katrina interrupted her own business of life-saving work, leaving TWS in good hands with the animal caretakers. Kris came for months helping to rescue animals from the floodwaters or found walking the streets dehydrated and starving. Trips home meant trips home with abandoned animals who needed more help than just veterinary medical care. They were the abandoned pets with bowel disease, diabetes, blind, FIV and FeL positive, dogs with special needs and deformities from the storm, the aged... the list goes on. Over half of Twisted Whisker's population are animals rescued from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Now as a result of sudden, unforeseen personal circumstances, Kris has had to relocate herself and all her beloved animals (in June, '08) to a new location. The sheds have now all been moved, kennels redone at the new place, and the animals all moved. Each of the outside sheds now need to be winterized. The three (separate) encloses for FIV cats, FeL cats, and for geriatric cats need to be insulated and heated. The five sheds for healthy kitties also needs to be heated, the water supply lines prepared for winter and two 12x12 metal or vinyl sheds are desperately needed for storage of pet food, cat litter and pet supplies and rescue equipment.

Twisted Whisker Farm Sanctuary also needs loving people to come help care for the animals and just spend time giving them personal attention. You will be part of a work that has literally helped hundreds of animals who would have had no other chance at a good life.

Please consider coming to volunteer and support Twisted Whisker with donations of materials or financially. If you want to volunteer please call Kris at 336.756.2833. She will be very glad to hear from anyone who can help! Animal handlers, rescuers, vet techs, vets... are always needed. Kris needs help with painting, fencing, minor carpentry and general chores (feed and care for the animals on a daily basis). Come on down (or up!) and lend a hand! Everyone and anyone is welcome.

Attention Scout Leaders! In order to qualify for the popcorn bonus, it is required that a representative from your unit attend a district level popcorn kickoff.
Piedmont’s Popcorn Kickoff will be on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 7 PM at Forsyth Medical Center’s Lambeth Auditoreum. That is THIS THURSDAY!

There will be no charge for Parking if you follow these instructions:

Parking will be in the employee lot, which can be entered from either Silas Creek Parkway or Hawthorne Road. The gates will be up, so there will be no tickets to validate.

The employee lot is the closest parking to the Lambeth Auditorium, there will be officers on hand to guide attendees.

Attention Cub Scouters!

Wednesday, Aug. 20 is the Open House night for our Elementary Schools in Forsyth County. As we met with the principals, most of them said that it would be OK for our packs to come and setup a table in the building so that Packs would be available to parents for information.

It is strongly recommended that each pack have representatives there in addition to the Cub Scout Sign-Up night. Remember, if your Pack is not there, there may be another pack represented (giving them an advantage).

Before deciding to attend the Open House, please clear it with the Elementary School first. It should not be a problem, but it is simply a good idea to let them know that you are planning to come.

This Friday, August 15 is the deadline for signing up for National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) which I believe is often referred to as "Top Gun." In the old days, it was called JLT for Junior Leadership Training. It is geared toward the Youth leaders in our Boy Scout troops. It is valuable training that could greatly enhance your troop leadership and program for the coming year, so if you do not have someone signed up to attend, then please do so by Friday!

Our August Round Table is always different from all the others. The most obvious difference is that we have a picnic and it is held at a different place. This takes place tomorrow evening (Thursday, August 14) at the Moravian Church (Fairview) near the Scout Office on Silas Creek Parkway. It will be outside under the picnic shelter and will start around 6:00 PM and will include Fried Chicken, Hamburgers, Hotdogs, and Watermelon plus a lot of information you will need for the coming new year in Scouting.

After August, our remaining Round Table meetings will be at 7:00 at Maple Springs UMC on Reynolda Road, on the 2nd Thursday of each month through May.

If you are serving with the Commissioner Service or if you are a member of our District Committee, then mark the 1st Thursday of each month for our meetings, also at Maple Springs UMC.

Commissioners meet at 6:00 and the Committee meets at 7:00.

Lowe’s Motor Speedway will once again be hosting a Scouts Sleepover Night on Saturday, August 16 in conjunction with our Monster Truck & Thrill Show at The Dirt Track. We had a great turnout last year with Scouts coming from North and South Carolina and as far away as Virginia and Tennessee.

I have attached an introduction letter and official Scouts Sleepover Order Form for you to distribute to your Scouts. With your help promoting this event, we will be sure to have another successful Scouts Sleepover Night. If anyone has questions or would like to sign up, please direct them back to myself and I will take care of them.

There are only 4 weeks to go until the 2nd annual Scout Sleepover and Monster Truck Bash being held on Saturday, August 16. This will be a great evening of Monster Truck racing combined with a rare opportunity to sleep under the stars in the infield of Lowe’s Motor Speedway. I appreciate everyone helping to get the word out about this event and we are expecting another great turnout. If you have not signed up yet, or informed us of your interest in attending, please do so when you are ready.

Just a reminder, the event price will go up $3 per person if you sign up after July 31. I have attached our official sleepover letter and order form for you to fill out when you have your group finalized. Even if you are not able to put together a group but have individuals interested in attending, please let them know they can still participate.

Attention Cub Leaders and Parents:

June 30 will be the last day we will be accepting day camp applications. After June 30 we will not be accepting applications since we will need to purchase supplies and prepare for Day Camp. We also have camperships available for families who need assistance; however campership forms, day camp applications, and the names of the required chaperones must also be submitted by June 30.

Also, a few packs that still need chaperones need to submit those names by June 30. Chaperones are necessary in order to maintain appropriate supervision. We need each pack to send 1 chaperone for every 5 Scouts. Please keep in mind that parents can share this responsibility throughout the week if they so desire. Therefore, if a den has 5 Scouts, then the parent of each Scout can take one day during the week to serve as a chaperone.

TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT SCOUTERS:

We do have some great group rates and special packages for the Scouts.

On Wednesday day games, which start at noon, we have 3 different plans to choose from. The first being a $5 package which is just a general admission ticket, the next is $8 and that includes the general admission ticket and food voucher (which is good for one hot dog and one soda). Our last deal is $10 which is the general admission ticket, food voucher, and a hat. The dates these prices are good for are on: ~~5/28~~, 6/18, 7/23, and 7/30.

We also have a group rate that is good on every other night. The group needs a minimum of 15 people to book. As far as pricing goes, it’s a flat $8 a person but that includes seating in the reserved section, everyone receives a free hat and in addition a special PA announcement will go out welcoming everyone to the stadium.

I hope something sounds good to you and we can work together to plan an evening out for everyone. If you have any further questions do not hesitate to ask, I’d be more then happy to answer them for you!

The Trail's End Popcorn Team will be coming to Winston-Salem on Saturday, May 31 to help units build the best popcorn sale ever. They will be at Augsburg Lutheran Church Family Life Center (a location convenient to ALL!) 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Up to two leaders per unit can attend - it is recommended that the Popcorn Chair and Unit Leader (Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Crew Advisor) be selected to attend for your unit.

They will cover conducting of a great unit kickoff, motivation for your Scouts and parents, designing your unit's prize package, and setting unit & youth goals. There will be a FREE BBQ lunch for attendees and drawings for a Razor USA Electric Scooter, a Nintendo DS Light Game System, two $100 gift certificates to the Scout Shop, and lots of other giveaways - including free Trail's End t-shirts for all attendees. Plus you get to see the new products and prizes for 2008.

If your troop attended the PDAC event (Piedmont District Advancement Camporee - the event formally known as Expo) this last weekend, the merit badge advancement information is now available on the council website. We mentioned at the event that it would take a few days to post the information and we now have it posted.

You will then see the links for the instructions to view the merit badge tracker. It is very important that you read the instructions before reading the merit badge tracker. Once in the merit badge tracker you will be able to sort by troop number and see your Scouts who participated and what they earned.

In the instructions it indicates that the completed requirements are indicated with a gray shaded space. It may be also shown with a Y (meaning that yes, they completed that requirement).

Each Scout’s full first name is listed with the first initial of his last name. No other information save his troop number and what requirements he completed are listed in this file.

We would prefer checks, as opposed to cash this year at the registration check-in area. Please spread the word to your Scouts and Leaders so that this is not an issue. This is especially a problem during individual registration on Saturday morning. Therefore, please ask your parents/Scouts to bring a check as opposed to paying cash. Checks can be made out to Old Hickory Council, BSA.

Also, please be aware that Boy Scouts are responsible to have their Merit Badge Booklet when they arrive. We are not planning on having booklets available on site, so plans need to be made to get them before the day of the event.

Please relay to your Scouts and parents that they may not get the merit badge that they signed up for. Every year, there seem to be a few individuals that get very upset because their son didn’t get the merit badge that he wanted. Please help them to understand, before they arrive, that there are limited seats in each class and so it is a real possibility that they will not get what they signed up for. Classes are filled primarily on a first come first serve basis. But also understand that we will not have a single troop fill all spots in a class. For example, in situations where troops sign up 25 Scouts for one class, they will more than likely be given some slots, but they will not be given all of them. This, of course, is in the interest of fairness.

It is highly suggested that Scouts indicate their 1st and 2nd choice of merit badges, in case the class for their 1st request cannot take any more Scouts. Use a 1, 2 or 3 to indicate their preference. If a Scout already has one of the merit badges offered, then it would help us to indicate which merit badges that he already has on the individual registration form.

Any pre-registered Scout who does not show by 8:30 AM on Saturday morning and receive his registration information will be considered a no-show and his slot will be redistributed as required for those trying to register on-site.

Do you want your unit to have a chance for being recognized as a Centennial Quality Unit for 2008? Then you MUST have your unit recharter in on time, and Monday is the absolute deadline. To be counted as rechartering on time, your charter must absolutely be turned in by March 31. Michael and Dominique are both willing, able, and available to provide assistance if you need help.

Even if you did an online recharter, it is not complete and "in" until the paperwork with the required signatures are "in." So, don't be late!

SERVICE OPPORTUNITY
Here is an opportunity to be part of an exciting, premier professional
sporting event here in Winston-Salem: The USA v. France Davis Cup Tennis Match
April 11-13.

The Boy Scouts have been asked to present the colors of the 50 nations that
compete in the Davis Cup as part of the opening ceremonies on Saturday morning
April 12th. Team USA (Andy Roddick, James Blake and the Bryan brothers) will
take on the Team France (Tsonga and Gasquet) in the Davis Cup Quarter Finals at
a sold out Joel Coliseum. For the first time in the history of the Davis Cup, a
city (our city of Winston-Salem) is hosting matches two years in a row. The Boy
Scouts represented themselves and Winston-Salem very well last year, and we
hope to put together an even better presentation this year!

This project calls for 50 Scouts to participate and there is also the need for
5 adult leaders. Scouts will need to dress in full Class A uniform. The adults,
not scouts, will have a "walk through" on Thursday evening April 10th. While a
scout is always Helpful and never expects to benefit from a good turn,
participating scouts and adults will be treated to terrific eats and drinks
after the ceremony.

Dr. Scott Washburn from Troop 919 is coordinating this event and needs your help.

Leaders, ask your Scouts to volunteer for this project and then contact Dr.
Washburn with your unit info by Tuesday, April 8th.
