District Note: CS Camp New Dates / Potential Fund Raiser (Friday, February 29, 2008)

TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT SCOUTERS:

Cub Scout Leaders:

Due to the snow days extending the school year for Forsyth County Schools, Piedmont has been moved to the second session of Resident Camp, June 11-14.  Please pass the word on to your fellow leaders, parents, and Cub Scouts.

************

Potential Fund Raiser:
Our firm fills a 20+ gallon trash bag with soft drink cans and water bottles on a weekly basis – sometimes there’s a little more than that.

Currently, one of us takes the recycling home each week to put on the curb for city pick-up.  However, if one of the troops could use these cans/water bottles as a fundraiser, we would love to make them available to the troop.
Our office is off Stratford Rd, just past the K&W cafeteria on Healy Dr.
Thanks!

District Note: United Way needs your stories... (Friday, February 22, 2008)

TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT SCOUTERS:

Dear Scouters,

If you have a good story to tell about a Scout, we would like you to share this with us so that we can pass it on to the United Way, who is a strong supporter of Scouting in our area.  They are asking for stories no later than Wednesday of next week (Feb. 27).  We would appreciate your help with this,  if you have a good story to tell.

The Forsyth County United Way has asked for three "client success stories" to accompany our presentation for funding. They don't need to be more than about 250 words each, but I need stories that relate to the areas we are applying for funds under. They are:

High School Graduation: I need a story about a Boy Scout that perhaps was struggling in school, then as a result of his Scouting experience improved his performance, or something related to the concept that Scouting helps young men do better in school and contributes to the graduation rate.

Childhood Obesity: I need a story about a Cub Scout, Boy Scout or Venturer that relates to the concept that Scouting helps young people get and stay physically active. This would perhaps be about a Scout who was overweight, then as a result of becoming involved in Scouting (hiking, backpacking, etc) lost weight and became more active.

Child Abuse: This will be a tough one, but in this case we would obviously withhold the name of the Scout. I'm looking for something related to a Scout who as a result of seeing the youth protection video, or reading the supplement, or discussing the issues of abuse with his leaders, then revealed a situation with himself or another and was able to get help, or something like that.

The bad news is that I need them no later than Wednesday of next week (February 27th). Please email any potential stories to Steve Daniel at sdaniel@bsamail.org, or call me at 336-760-2900.

Thank you so much for your assistance!

District Note: Prayers Answered 1 & 2 (Tuesday, February 19, 2008)

TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT SCOUTERS:

I just received the following note from Travis Gentry to share with you:

Thank you so much for the thoughts and prayers over the last month. The surgery I had last week was successful and I did not talk much for 5 days before and not at all for 7 days after.  I got a call on Wednesday of this week letting me know that the polyp was benign and that I can start talking again.  Your friendship means a lot to me, especially in times like these.

Village Outdoor Shop will host the Trey Jones Gearhead Expo on Saturday March 1, 2008 from 10:00am- 4:00pm.

The event will be housed in the Cow Barn at Reynolda Village, building # 106 (formerly Rolly’s Great Kids).  Weather permitting we will also use the front and rear lawns near our store.

Manufacturer’s sales representatives from Mountain Hard Wear, Sierra Designs, Deuter packs, MSR and Osprey packs will be in attendance to discuss their new spring 2008 product lines.

Technical apparel representatives from Ibex, Icebreaker, Smartwool and Darn Tough socks will also be present.  Keen, Lowa boots, Native Eyewear and Snow Peak round out the line up.

25% of Village Outdoor sales that day will go to fund needs-based scholarships to Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico.

*All proceeds from raffles of equipment and apparel will go to the fund.

Donations to the Winston-Salem Foundation toward the endowment will also be accepted.

Some background on the name of the event:

The scholarships are in honor of Trey Jones who was a local Scout in BSA Troop 934 at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, NC.  Trey was on staff at Philmont Scout Ranch for three summers.  Trey was director of the Philmont ROCS (Roving Outdoor Conservation School) Program.  Tragically, Trey died in an auto accident two years ago.  His mother, Jan Jones, approached me soon after we opened Village Outdoor and asked if we would help in acquiring needed equipment for boys to attend Philmont.  Later, she and several of her close friends came up with the idea for this Expo.  Trey was the ultimate Gearhead.  I met Trey soon after he started in Boy Scouts.  It was fun watching Trey’s interest and skills in the outdoors grow.  Trey was a senior at NCSU at the time of his accident.

Jan Jones has begun a scholarship fund which is managed by the Winston-Salem Foundation.  There are two scholarships; both are needs-based, then merit-based.  One scholarship is for local Scouts who are members of Old Hickory Council in Winston-Salem, NC which serves the eight counties of northwest North Carolina.  The second is a national scholarship for any Scout who resides in the United States.  Jan’s goal is for Scouts to have a “mountaintop experience” that may otherwise be financially out of reach.  She knows how important the Philmont experience was in Trey’s life.  Proceeds from Village Outdoor sales and products that will be raffled by the sales representatives will further endow the scholarships.  Glenna and I are honored that Jan has asked us to help with this event.

Thank you for considering supporting the Trey Jones Gearhead Expo.  We hope that you will put it on your calendar and make your friends aware of the event.  Please forward this email where you feel it is appropriate.

Sincerely,

Don and Glenna Wright

TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT SCOUTERS:

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Volunteers will meet at Blum Park. Come on out and help beautify the community!

The annual Great Winston-Salem Cleanup, part of the national Great American Cleanup, will take place on Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to noon. Hundreds of volunteers are needed to help clean up local roadways, parks and schools. All supplies are provided as well as lunch. It's a fun way to make a positive impact in the community!

Dearest friends,

I want to thank you so much for all your prayers, calls, emails, visits and concerns over the past few weeks. My surgery went well on Tuesday and from all indications things are very good. The doctor felt the polyp was benign and we will hear soon from the official tests. I have been blessed with very little pain or soreness and went back to work yesterday.  I would not be here today without the guiding hand of God and the saving power of Jesus Christ. My family is blessed to have great friends like you and I can not thank God enough for sending you our way. The kind words expressed and the support you have given Renee has been a true blessing in this time.

Yours in Scouting,

Travis Gentry & Family

KEITH ROBERTS
Many of you know Keith Roberts and his wife Sandy from their many activities with the OA and around Camp Raven Knob.  Keith had a heart attack this week, has had a stent installed, and is now doing fine at High Point Regional Hospital.  He is expecting to go home within the next couple days but will have a period of recovery.  Please keep Keith and Sandy in your prayers!

TRAVIS GENTRY
Many of you also know Travis Gentry, our former District Director.  He had surgery this week for a problem with his vocal chords and will not be talking for awhile.  Please keep Travis and his family in your prayers!
