District Note: Venture Training / Prayer Requests / Article (Friday, January 25, 2008)

TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT SCOUTERS:

FOR VENTURING CREWS AND SCOUT TROOPS WITH OLDER YOUTH:
For the first time in several years, a Powderhorn course will be offered within Area 7.  TheColonial Virginia Council is hosting a course on April 18-20 & May 2-4, 2008.  They would welcome participants from the other councils within the Area.  I have attached the course flier.  This course is a great means of helping our Venturing leaders & other Scouters to understand resources & safety for high adventure activites for older youth.

If you have questions about the course, you may contact the Course Director (Bill Monroe wcmonroe@cox.net) or the Staff advisor Ryan Serio (rserio@bsamail.org).

John Young, Area 7 president

Please keep David Reavis (Scoutmaster Troop 911) and his family in your prayers as his father passed away last weekend.
A memorial service was conducted Wednesday, Jan. 23 at Trinity United Methodist Church.
The obituary for  Charles George Reavis Jr., was in Monday's Winston-Salem Journal.
(Follow this link and click on last Monday (1/21) on the calendar.)

Also, please lift some prayers for Travis Gentry (former Piedmont District Director) who is having surgery Feb. 5 for a problem with his vocal chords.  If all goes as expected, he will be unable to talk at all for about 10 days and then very little for the next several months.  You know this will be difficult for Paisley Middle School's "Teacher of the Year!"

District Note: Family FOS (Thursday, January 10, 2008)

TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT SCOUTERS:

2008 Family Friends of Scouting Campaign

January starts the annual Family Friends of Scouting Campaign. While the bulk of our Old Hickory Council support comes from camp fees, popcorn profits and the United Way, the balance is made up from donations from individuals and businesses. Each year, a campaign presentation is made at each unit by the district (when parents can be present) to appeal for their support.

This year Bill Orr is the Piedmont Chairman of this committee and they will be calling your unit leader to arrange a date to meet. You can save us a lot of time and calling though by emailing Bill Orr with a date we can make a presentation, and the presenter will get back with you.  His email is borr@atriumwindows.com or he can be reached by phone at 761-8639.

Thanks for your continued support of Scouting and a successful 2008 campaign.

District Note: Speaking of ... (Monday, January 7, 2008)

TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT SCOUTERS:

ROUND TABLE THIS THURSDAY!

This Thursday, January 10, 2008, we will be having a Charter Renewal Information meeting before the Roundtable at Maple Springs United Methodist Church.  The Charter Renewal meeting will start at 6 PM.

Dinner will be served.  We ask that each person put in $5 to offset the cost of the food.

The Charter Renewal meeting will cover what you need to know to recharter in 2008.  We will cover some common mistakes that lead to delays in the recharter process and will be answering questions.  The kits will also be distributed during this meeting.

The Scouting for Food Representative will be at the Roundtable and we will be distributing Scouting for Food bags to units that night.

See you at the Roundtable!

Piedmont District Staff

************

Speaking of the Round Table, the meeting itself will begin at 7:00 and is open to ALL adult scout leaders in the District.  The meeting is split with three concurrent sessions - Cub Scout Leaders, Boy Scout Leaders, and Venturing Leaders.

The Boy Scout session topic will be "Scouting For Food" and the Cub Scout session will include ideas and samples of how to make next month's program more interesting for your den/pack.

************

Speaking of Scouting For Food, February is just around the corner and is when we have our annual Scouting for Food drive.  Scouts are asked to distribute special bags through their neighborhood and/or church and then retrieve those bags the following week (hopefully) filled with donated food.  It is a very important service for your community, so please plan to have your unit participate this year!

BAGS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THIS WEEK'S ROUND TABLE.

************

Speaking of February, is your unit planning to participate in a Scout Sunday or Scout Sabbath event this year?  It is an excellent opportunity to emphasize the religious aspect of Scouting to your youth while at the same time getting some valuable recognition from your Sponsoring Organization.  If your unit is not sponsored by a church, then contact one of the many local units who are and they would be very, very happy to have your unit join them on this very important date in Scouting!

************

Speaking of important dates in Scouting, the deadline for submitting your completed 2007 goal sheet for the Centennial Quality Unit Award has been extended to January 31!  I know that we have a lot of quality units in the Piedmont District, but we have not had a lot of forms submitted this year.  I know, the form is supposed to be signed by your Unit Commissioner, but please go ahead and complete the form and then fax, mail, or deliver it to the council office and we will get the required Commissioner signature.  Let me know (via return email) if you need a form and I will email one to you!

************

Speaking of Centennial Quality Unit awards, the 2008 goal sheet will be distributed this Thursday along with your Recharter Packet.  The process is simple.  Just write in your unit goals for this year and turn it in.  You can turn it in when you turn in your recharter or you can turn it in before then.  The goals you write in can be modified later if you wish.  Then, next September just complete the form stating that you completed your goals.  That's it.

Venture Crew 934 and Crew 919 are hosting a The BSA Ready & Prepared event. We will be observing the Winston-Salem Police Department, North Carolina Highway Patrol and Forsyth County Sheriffs enforcement officers performing a road side sobriety checkpoint.

This is open to all registered Adults, Explorers, Crew and Ship members. The event will start with a lineup at 9:00PM 22 December 2007, NC State Highway Patrol 2001 Silas Creek Parkway Winston Salem, NC 27103 (336) 761-2258. A sign-in sheet at the lineup, for the event will be in the lobby. A lineup is a meeting prior to the road side check which all participants discuss their particular assignments and safety procedures. After the lineup, we will depart to the roadside checkpoint. All Adults/Crew members are welcome to stay and observe in the safe area while the checks are in progress.  In the safe area, the crew members will socialize with the officers while enjoying donated food and beverages.
