Date: February 18th 2008
Wilderness Survival Campout – Our Wilderness Survival Campout will be at Camp Raven Knob, March 7-9. Please note this is a date change for our previously published Troop calendar.
Order of the Arrow Elections – Our Troop will have the opportunity to select several Scouts to be elected into the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s National Honor Society. Our Troop elections
will be held at our Troop meeting on Tuesday, March 4 and we must have at least 28 youth members of our Troop present to hold the election. OA members are elected by all Troop members, not just OA members.
The purpose of the Order of the Arrow is fourfold:
To be eligible to election by his Troop into the OA, a Scout must be First Class rank and must have experienced fifteen days and nights of Boy Scout camping during the two-year period prior to the election, including one long-term camp consisting of six consecutive days and five nights of resident camping.
The following Troop 919 Scouts are eligible for election into the OA this year:
PLC – The Troop 919 Patrol Leader’s Council meets at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Scout Hut.
Board of Review – The Troop Committee will be available on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Scout Hut to conduct your Board of Review for rank advancement. You must schedule a Scoutmaster’s Conference prior to your Board of Review.
Troop Committee Meeting – The Troop Committee will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Scout Hut.
Scout Sunday – Thanks to all of the Scouts and their families who joined us at Olivet Moravain Church on Sunday for Scout Sunday.
Thank you to the Scouts who participated in Sunday’s service and a special salute to Logan for stepping up and taking on an expanded role in the service at the last minute.
CPR Course - If you need CPR certification or need to renew your CPR certificaiton, Mrs. Lasley is making arrangements for a course to be taught on March 2. Call Mrs. Lasley is you are interested.
Ice Hockey Tickets - Dr Michael Morykwas is once again offering our Troop complimentary tickets to the Winston-Salem Police Dept vs Medical Center Doctors charity ice hockey game. The game will be played on Saturday, March 1 at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum Annex at 7 p.m.
If you want to attend this event, please let Mr. Gordon know at Tuesday's Troop meeting. He plans to have the tickets available at the Troop meeting on February 22. If you are not planning to attend Tuesday's meeting, give him a call with your response. His number (Lyle's dad) is on our Troop roster.
Summer Camp – Have you been thinking about your plans for summer camp at Camp Raven Knob?
We will be at summer camp the week of July 13 and it’s time to begin registering for summer
camp. The cost for summer camp is $200, plus any additional program fees.
Your initial deposit of $50 is now due. Most Scouts at Troop 919 will have a portion of their summer camp paid for as the result of your outstanding sales efforts in last year’s popcorn sale.
Camp Raven Knob is offering some new merit badges this summer. If you would like to get a jump on your summer camp planning, our Troop’s CRK summer camp handout can be downloaded from the Troop’s website
Trey Jones Gearhead Expo - Village Outdoor Shop will host the Trey Jones Gearhead Expo on Saturday March 1, 2008 from 10:00am- 4:00pm.
The event will be housed in the Cow Barn at Reynolda Village, building # 106 (formerly Rolly’s Great Kids). Weather permitting we will also use the front and rear lawns near our store.
Manufacturer’s sales representatives from Mountain Hard Wear, Sierra Designs, Deuter packs, MSR and Osprey packs will be in attendance to discuss their new spring 2008 product lines.
Technical apparel representatives from Ibex, Icebreaker, Smartwool and Darn Tough socks will also be present. Keen, Lowa boots, Native Eyewear and Snow Peak round out the line up.
25% of Village Outdoor sales that day will go to fund needs-based scholarships to Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico.
*All proceeds from raffles of equipment and apparel will go to the fund.
Donations to the Winston-Salem Foundation toward the endowment will also be accepted.
Don Wright, owner of the Village Outdoor Shop provided some background on the event in the following letter:
The scholarships are in honor of Trey Jones who was a local Scout in BSA Troop 934 at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, NC. Trey was on staff at Philmont Scout Ranch for three summers. Trey was director of the Philmont ROCS (Roving Outdoor Conservation School) Program. Tragically, Trey died in an auto accident two years ago. His mother, Jan Jones, approached me soon after we opened Village Outdoor and asked if we would help in acquiring needed equipment for boys to attend Philmont. Later, she and several of her close friends came up with the idea for this Expo. Trey was the ultimate Gearhead. I met Trey soon after he started in Boy Scouts. It was fun watching Trey’s interest and skills in the outdoors grow. Trey was a senior at NCSU at the time of his accident.
Jan Jones has begun a scholarship fund which is managed by the Winston-Salem Foundation. There are two scholarships; both are needs-based, then merit-based. One scholarship is for local Scouts who are members of Old Hickory Council in Winston-Salem, NC which serves the eight counties of northwest North Carolina. The second is a national scholarship for any Scout who resides in the United States. Jan’s goal is for Scouts to have a “mountaintop experience” that may otherwise be financially out of reach. She knows how important the Philmont experience was in Trey’s life. Proceeds from Village Outdoor sales and products that will be raffled by the sales representatives will further endow the scholarships. Glenna and I are honored that Jan has asked us to help with this event.
Thank you for considering supporting the Trey Jones Gearhead Expo. We hope that you will put it on your calendar and make your friends aware of the event.
